How much VRAM for 1080p gaming?
Short answer: plan on 8 GB as a workable floor at medium–high settings and 12 GB if you want ultra presets or light ray tracing. Our gaming hub lists 12 GB comfortable / 8 GB bare minimum for 1080p.[1]
The 1080p VRAM ladder
| VRAM | 1080p fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GB | Medium / high; ultra + RT often tight | TechSpot-style guidance: 8 GB is fine until textures and RT push past the pool.[2] See also Is 8GB enough?. |
| 12 GB | Comfortable high / ultra | Matches the hub table's comfortable 1080p mark.[1] |
| 16 GB+ | Headroom for mods, heavy RT, future titles | More than most 1080p raster needs; useful if you also create or play at higher res later. |
1080p stresses VRAM less than 1440p or 4K, but settings (textures and ray tracing) often matter more than the resolution alone.[2]
Ray tracing at 1080p
RT and path tracing can overflow an 8 GB card even at 1080p. Prefer selective RT or keep it off on 8 GB; 12 GB is a safer floor if you care about RT.[2]
If 8 GB feels tight
- Lower textures first.[2]
- Disable or reduce RT / path tracing.[2]
- Use DLSS / FSR Quality so the GPU renders fewer pixels while keeping a 1080p output.[4]
- Check the gaming hub and the homepage calculator (Gaming → 1080p).

Frequently asked questions
Is 8GB enough for 1080p ultra?
Often for raster ultra in older or mid-weight titles. With heavy ray tracing or path tracing, expect stutter unless you lower textures — 12 GB is the safer ultra/RT mark.[1][2]
